THE BEST CHRISTMAS
PAGEANT EVER
a film by Dallas Jenkins released through Lionsgate in 2024
A film with an 'in-period' setting is
extremely problematic—especially
with a limited budget. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,
though based on a novel by Barbara Robinson published in 1972, would do
better to ignore its roots—the
resultant present-day coda adds nothing to the story.
The child casting is brilliant, but
the adult casting is barely adequate. Still, the dialogue is
occasionally witty, and the staple pre-climax confrontation scene (that
clears the air between the main characters before the final challenge is
met) is the best one in the film, ably managed by the child leads.
We're left with a fitfully amusing
tale making very important points with not a hint of subtlety.
